According to the latest rumors, Ram is planning to build an all-new mid-size pickup truck that will be based on the Jeep Wrangler pickup. Moreover, it is a 2022 Dodge Dakota that will now wear Ram’s badge. Dakota was once a famous pickup truck, before its discount in 2011. The arriving model is a body-on-frame pickup just like the Wrangler. Interestingly, both models will be built in the same plant in Ohio.

The Ram is willing to deliver a pickup that will share the same platform and powertrain as the famous Wrangler model. A 3.6-liter V6 is probable, along with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo. That means the 8-speed and 6-speed automatic transmissions are in the offer, along with the four-wheel-drive setup. And while the Wrangler will arrive in 2020, Dakota will hit the roads by the end of 2021.

2022 Dodge Dakota will use some cues from the Wrangler model

We are taking a bold guess here. This model is very probable, but so far, there are not many details about it. That includes the exterior that is a mystery for now. However, Ram will try to get in the mix, a lot. That means the 2022 Dodge Dakota will arrive with its existing design. Ram will for sure implement some of the company’s design language. Since the new Dakota will be based on the Wrangler, we can expect some similar or the same cues as well.

However, that variant is less likely, here’s why. Dakota will use the same platform as the Jeep Wrangler. The goal is to deliver the pickup with about the same size, which means Dakota will arrive as the mid-size truck. 18 to 20-inch wheels are the most likely outcome, but we can’t get into details for the rest of the exterior.

The story continues from the inside as well. The 2022 Dodge Dakota will for sure arrive as a modern and attractive pickup. The interior will be closer to the Jeep’s models than to the Ram’s. Jeep is a well-known carmaker that delivers upscale cabins. After all, Jeep is borrowing everything from its own lineup of SUVs. For that reason, the cabin will look very modern and the design will be stylish.

Just like the Wrangler, Dakota will also arrive in numerous trim levels. With that in mind, you can start from the regular model with less luxury that is focused on work more than anything. Upper trims will for sure deliver more upscale upholstery and features, so even the longer trips would be available. However, this model is still far from the production.

The things are getting clearer under the hood. The upcoming 2022 Dodge Dakota will deploy the same powertrain choices as the Jeep Wrangler. That means the 3.6-liter V6 and 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engines are in the offer. The V6 will deliver 285 horsepower while the turbocharged four-cylinder up to 296 horses.

Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be available. The 8-speed automatic transmission will come as standard, but the 6-speed manual will be in the offer for those who are seeking more off-roading adventures. On top of that, the four-wheel-drive configuration will be optional.
