Toyota has just released a new version of the popular Hilux truck. The 2021 Toyota Hilux Mako is a new variant that will go on sale in New Zealand. This model comes with special upgrades and Mako is basically a package. Named after the Mako shark, this package will improve the truck’s aesthetics. Moreover, Hilux will get better functionality as well.
While Hilux Mako will rival the Ranger Raptor pickup, this version will be sold in only 250 copies. Moreover, the Mako model is available in New Zealand only. The production will start in Toyota’s local factory and here’s everything you need to know about it.
2021 Hilux Mako Looks Aggressive
The upcoming 2021 Toyota Hilux Mako will arrive with plenty of refreshments. For a start, this model comes with a suspension lift kit. Thanks to that, Hilux will get more ground clearance, both front and rear.
On top of that, Toyota offers adjustable dampers which will result in a superb off-road driving experience. Mako variant will get steel front and rear bumpers and new braided brake lines. A New LED light bar has been added, along with more stylish fender flares and new skid plates. Every Mako model comes with 18-inch Rhino wheels and larger front discs.
As for the interior, changes are less drastic. New 2021 Toyota Hilux Mako will improve the truck’s comfort. For a start, the Hilux model will get unique Mako badges embossed into the leather seats. The interior is closer to the Limited trim level so expect more luxury than inside the base trim level.
We like how the seats are looking sportier and new color accents are a very nice addition. Hilux is known for a well-equipped truck and the Mako package will add more standard amenities. On the other hand, the cabin layout and design will largely remain.
Hilux Mako Specs
Unfortunately, the Mako package won’t introduce major upgrades under the hood. The 2021 Toyota Hilux Mako will deploy the same 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine as the regular Hilux. This engine is capable of producing 200 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque.
Compared to Ford Ranger Raptor, Hilux provides slightly lower performance figures. Whatsoever, Ranger comes with a smaller 2.0-liter turbodiesel that generates 210 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque. Lastly, Toyota offers a standard selectable 4WD system.
2021 Toyota Hilux Mako Price and Release Date
The price of the new 2021 Toyota Hilux is not official yet. The base trim level is available for $22,000 so the Mako edition will cost significantly above that. We don’t expect such an affordable price but Hilux Mako is made to rival Ford Ranger Raptor. For that reason, the price will be closer to the Raptor version. The sales will begin in the coming months but the Hilux Maxo model will be sold in 250 copies only.
